Google unveiled several new features for Google Maps on Wednesday, designed to help you navigate the busy holiday season, which often involves lots of travel. Whether you’re visiting family, planning city breaks, or shopping for specific holiday items, Google Maps can be a useful companion. It assists in exploring new places or navigating your hometown more efficiently—including helping you find and charge your electric vehicle (EV), a crucial task to keep you moving.
Google Maps now shows real-time EV charger availability
Starting next week, Google Maps will give EV owners a significant upgrade for charging their vehicles. Using AI, the app will display how many chargers are likely to be available at a specific location, covering hundreds of thousands of charging stations worldwide. While Google Maps already shows EV charging stations along your route, including networks like Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America, this wasn’t enough. Chargers might be occupied by the time you arrive. The new feature analyzes historical data with AI to predict whether chargers will be free when you get there. This availability info will appear on Google Maps in Android Auto and vehicles with Google integration.
New Gemini AI features and anonymous reviews in Maps
Google Maps is also rolling out new features powered by Gemini AI to enhance your exploration while maintaining your privacy when leaving reviews. The “know before you go” feature provides insider tips about places directly within Google Maps. Gemini analyzes reviews and online searches to offer practical advice, such as reservation tips or secret menu items, displayed under places you’re researching. This feature is launching on Android and iPhone in the U.S.
Updated Explore tab powered by Gemini AI
The Explore tab in Google Maps now offers more helpful information when searching for attractions nearby. By swiping up, users can discover trending and popular activities close to them. The tab also includes curated lists from trusted sources like Viator, Lonely Planet, and OpenTable, along with recommendations from local influencers. This update will be available worldwide this month on both Android and iPhone.
Google Maps reviews now allow nicknames and custom images.
Finally, Google is updating its review system to make it easier and more fun to leave helpful feedback. Users can now select a nickname and a custom profile picture instead of their real name. For example, a user might choose “Julia Sweets” as their nickname. Google assures that review security remains intact, with ongoing monitoring to prevent fake or misleading content. This feature is rolling out this month across Android, iPhone, and desktop platforms.
