A recent leak hinted that Google was integrating Gemini-powered conversations into Google Maps — transforming the navigation app into a smart, chat-style experience focused on travel and local exploration. While that leak didn’t capture the full story, Google officially unveiled four new Gemini features for Maps this week, and they could make your next trip much smoother.
Hands-Free Gemini Conversations While Driving
Soon, you’ll be able to talk to Gemini in Google Maps as if chatting with a helpful copilot. Using voice-based, hands-free interactions, drivers can ask Gemini questions or give commands without ever touching the screen.
In Google’s example, a driver asks for budget-friendly restaurants along their route. Gemini quickly finds one, offers parking details, and then automatically adds the stop — all without altering the final destination. The driver can even tell Gemini to create a Calendar event for that stop. You’ll also be able to report traffic incidents using just your voice.
This feature will roll out to Android and iPhone users in the coming weeks.
Landmark-Based Navigation
Gemini is also helping Maps rethink turn-by-turn directions. Instead of telling you to “turn right in 50 feet,” Maps will now reference visible landmarks to make navigation more natural.
For instance, you might hear, “Turn right after the Thai Siam Restaurant,” while seeing that restaurant highlighted on your screen. This landmark-based navigation feature will launch soon for Android and iPhone users in the U.S.
Smarter Traffic Alerts
Another improvement brings Gemini’s intelligence to real-time traffic updates. Even when you’re not driving, Maps will proactively inform you about accidents, slowdowns, or disruptions in areas you care about. This new proactive alerts feature will start rolling out to Android and iPhone users across the U.S.
Lens-Powered Visual Search with Gemini
Lastly, Google Maps is getting a smarter visual search experience through Google Lens. By pointing your phone at a place of interest, tapping the camera icon in the Maps search bar, and asking Gemini a question, you’ll get rich, AI-generated insights. Gemini can tell you why a restaurant is popular, what dishes people love, or what to expect inside. This feature will be especially handy for exploring new neighborhoods on foot and is launching this month for Android and iPhone users in the U.S.
