Samsung appears to be bracing for increased competition in the foldable smartphone market as Apple readies its first-generation foldable iPhone, rumored to debut as part of the iPhone 18 series next year. Tentatively called the iPhone Fold, Apple’s upcoming device has drawn intense industry speculation—some reports suggest a 2026 release, while others indicate production is progressing smoothly for an earlier launch.
According to Korean outlet DealSite, Samsung is moving proactively. The company reportedly plans to introduce the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a redesigned hinge aimed at reducing screen creasing—one of the biggest challenges in foldable display technology. Instead of using traditional chemical etching methods, Samsung will employ laser drilling to create micro-structures in the metal plate covering the hinge. This advanced approach could enhance durability and help the display remain smoother after repeated folds.
This isn’t the first time laser drilling has been linked to next-generation foldables. Earlier this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple’s foldable would feature a premium, laser-drilled hinge assembly to strengthen the screen and minimize creasing. Kuo also noted that while laser drilling is more costly than chemical etching, Apple is willing to pay extra to meet its stringent design standards.
What to Expect from the Galaxy Z Fold 8
DealSite indicates that Samsung is preparing several notable upgrades beyond the crease-resistant design. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rumored to feature a larger 5,000 mAh battery—up from the Fold 7’s 4,400 mAh unit—and could reintroduce S Pen compatibility, enhancing productivity for power users. Additional performance and design refinements are expected as Samsung works to maintain its lead in foldable technology, even as Apple enters the space.
Samsung typically unveils its foldables during the summer, with both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 expected around July. If timelines hold, Apple’s iPhone Fold could follow in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series and the next iPhone Air.
For Samsung, any delay in Apple’s foldable launch would be a strategic advantage, giving the Korean giant extra time to refine its technology and solidify its dominance before the competition intensifies.
