PlayStation Portal Finally Gets A Feature It Should Have Had From Day One

Sony’s PlayStation Portal has come a long way since its debut in 2023. When it first launched, the handheld device served primarily as a Remote Play extension for the PlayStation 5—useful for streaming games from your console over Wi-Fi, but not much more. It appealed mostly to dedicated PlayStation fans who wanted to keep gaming away from the TV. That may be about to change.

Over the past two years, Sony has quietly refined the Portal. One key update allowed it to connect to public Wi-Fi networks, making it much more practical for travel. Still, one major limitation held it back: the lack of true cloud gaming support. Without that, the Portal couldn’t compete with standalone handhelds like the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch.

Now, Sony is addressing that gap. The company recently announced that Cloud Streaming is officially coming to the PlayStation Portal. The feature is available exclusively to PlayStation Plus Premium members and allows users to stream select PS5 titles directly from Sony’s servers—no console required.

Why Cloud Streaming Changes Everything

Adding cloud gaming fundamentally transforms the PlayStation Portal’s value. For the first time, you can play high-end PS5 games on the go without keeping your console powered on at home. It also means multiple users can access games simultaneously across different devices, something Remote Play could not handle efficiently.

All you need is a stable high-speed internet connection and an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Once connected, you can access a robust library of titles, including acclaimed releases like “Ghost of Yōtei,” “Grand Theft Auto V,” and “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.” The full lineup of cloud-supported games is available through the PlayStation website for anyone curious about compatibility.

With cloud streaming, Sony is turning the PlayStation Portal from a niche accessory into a true handheld gaming platform—one that could finally live up to its promise of bringing console-quality gaming anywhere.
