OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Group Chat Functionality Globally

After successful testing of ChatGPT’s group chat feature in select markets, OpenAI is now rolling out this functionality globally. This new feature enables users to bring family, friends, and colleagues into conversations with AI, enhancing collaboration and social interaction. Initially available only in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, group chats will soon be accessible worldwide, including to users on the free tier, making it widely available to all ChatGPT users.

OpenAI highlights the practicality of group chats for various uses such as organizing group dinners or drafting project outlines with coworkers. These chats operate independently from users’ private conversations, ensuring that personal ChatGPT history remains confidential and is not shared within the group. This secure setup also makes group chats ideal for brainstorming sessions, whether planning a weekend trip or a surprise birthday party.

To start a group chat, users can tap the People icon located in the top right corner of any new or existing chat once the feature is available. Adding someone to a chat prompts ChatGPT to create a duplicate of the conversation as a new group chat, preserving the privacy of existing chats. Users can invite up to twenty people through a shared link. Upon creating or joining a group chat, users set up a basic profile including their name, username, and photo. OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 Auto powers these chats, dynamically selecting the most suitable AI model based on the prompt and subscription tier.

Group chat participants can interact with ChatGPT through text, image, and file uploads while enjoying features like image generation and dictation. Rate limits apply only to ChatGPT’s responses, not to messages exchanged between users. The AI is trained to sense the flow of the conversation, knowing when to respond and when to remain silent. ChatGPT can be called upon explicitly by mentioning its name. Additionally, it can react to messages with emojis and reference profile photos, adding a social dynamic to the interaction.
