Apple is gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027, and excitement is already building around the anticipated iPhone 20. According to multiple reports, including those from a credible Chinese leaker on Weibo known as Digital Chat Station, Apple is planning a revolutionary true all-display design for this milestone device.
The standout feature expected in the iPhone 20 is the adoption of advanced under-screen camera technology. Apple is reportedly working on this innovation as part of a strategic two-year plan to eliminate all cutouts from the iPhone’s display by 2027. Previous rumors indicated that under-display Face ID technology might debut with the iPhone 18 Pro models, paving the way for the iPhone 20 to feature a seamless front screen devoid of any visible selfie camera or Face ID sensor.
While several Android manufacturers have introduced under-display cameras, they often compromise on image quality due to the camera lens being positioned beneath multiple display layers. However, Apple seems to have overcome these challenges, promising high-quality imaging without the common drawbacks of this technology.
Regarding Apple’s under-display Face ID and camera advancements, recent reports reveal significant progress. In April, it was reported that LG Innotek has been developing under-display cameras featuring freeform optic multiple lens arrays. This innovation is designed to minimize image distortion and enhance brightness by eliminating the visible hole when the camera is inactive. Additionally, Apple’s upcoming foldable device is rumored to include a 24MP under-display camera, marking a potential industry first.
The iPhone Fold, expected to launch between late 2026 and 2027—depending on delays—could serve as a teaser for this groundbreaking technology before the iPhone 20’s release. Notably, the foldable model may not integrate Face ID, which means the combined under-display Face ID and camera system will likely be exclusive to the iPhone 20. Alongside these technological advancements, Apple is also anticipated to unveil a bold new design. However, details on this redesign remain scarce, leaving fans wondering if it could rival the iconic transformation seen when the company shifted from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone X.
In sum, the iPhone 20 promises to be a landmark device, showcasing Apple’s innovation in display technology and design as it honors two decades of iPhone evolution.
