OpenAI is developing new ChatGPT features that will soon enable users to access apps and AI agents directly within the chatbot. This will allow developers to publish applications inside ChatGPT, making them instantly available to users. While ChatGPT already supports custom chatbot creation via the GPT Store, these upcoming enhancements signal a broader integration of third-party apps and workflows.
Inside Look at the New ChatGPT Apps Menu
AI researchers Tibor Blaho and TestingCatalog recently shared screenshots revealing OpenAI’s work-in-progress interface for apps within ChatGPT. The images show a welcome screen hinting at an “Apps” menu inside the chat interface, listing well-known apps such as Instacart and Gmail. Another screenshot details an Expedia app listing resembling a mobile app store, complete with screenshots, descriptions, and a “Connect” button to link the user’s ChatGPT account to the app’s services.
Third-Party Workflows and AI Agents
Beyond third-party apps, OpenAI plans to support developer-published AI workflows and agents within ChatGPT. A feature codenamed Hermes, showcased by TestingCatalog, will allow developers to build custom agent workflows using the Agent Builder tool introduced earlier this year. These workflows can be published with unique URLs for users to integrate into their ChatGPT experience. OpenAI is also expected to enhance the workflow builder with image generation capabilities, potentially unveiling a new image generation model.
Enhancements to ChatGPT’s Image Generation
ChatGPT’s current image generation model, version 4o, gained popularity earlier in the year. However, with recent advances from competitors like Google’s Nano Banana models, OpenAI is likely preparing an upgrade to maintain its lead in AI image creation. This upgrade is anticipated to coincide with the other app and workflow features in ChatGPT.
Anticipated Launch and Future Updates
Evidence from leaked screenshots suggests OpenAI is in advanced stages of testing these features. While an official release date is unknown, industry insiders speculate a possible announcement during a December event, following OpenAI’s tradition of unveiling new AI innovations before the holidays, similar to last year’s “12 Days of OpenAI” series. This could mark a significant expansion in ChatGPT’s capabilities, blending more third-party and AI-powered workflows into everyday user interactions.
