Your Pixel Pro camera has a hidden feature that can significantly improve manual focusing precision: the focus peaking viewfinder. While many appreciate the Pixel’s excellent point-and-shoot capabilities, the manual Pro mode on Pixel Pro models offers advanced tools that photographers are still discovering.
Focus Peaking and Zoomed-In Viewfinder
When you switch to manual focus on Pixel Pro devices, focus peaking highlights areas in sharp focus, giving visual cues to help you adjust accurately. However, many users miss a small overlay button in manual focus mode that opens a zoomed-in viewfinder in the top-right corner of the screen.
This magnified window displays focus peaking cues in greater detail, enabling much finer control over focus. Tapping anywhere on the main viewfinder recenters the smaller zoom window, making compositions more precise and effortless.
Pro Mode Availability and Controls
Pro controls featuring manual focus, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, exposure, and shadows are available on the following Pixel phones:
- Pixel Fold
- Pixel 8 Pro
- Pixel 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold
- Pixel 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold
Additional settings include lens choice, resolution, and format control, giving you granular command over your shots.
Accessing Pro Mode
To activate Pro mode on a supported Pixel, open the Pixel Camera app and tap the settings slider button located at the bottom right. This mode unlocks rich manual controls, including the zoomed-in focus peaking viewfinder.
