For years, Google Assistant has been a default way to interact with Google’s ecosystem. This voice-based assistant allowed users to make calls, set timers and alarms, and handle a wide variety of tasks using just their voice. However, Google has long planned to replace Assistant with its more powerful Gemini AI model. Although the transition has been gradual, Google now appears to have set a firm timetable to retire its original voice assistant once and for all.
According to updated support documents, Google will officially retire Assistant around March 2026. A banner on the support forum notes that Assistant will be available only “until March 2026.” After this date, all remaining Assistant features are expected to shift to Gemini, fully supplanting the classic Google Assistant across Android phones, Android Auto, Google TV, and other compatible devices.
Google’s move to retire Assistant has been anticipated for some time. Gemini has already started rolling out, replacing the built-in voice assistant on Android Auto and Google TV streaming devices. Google has publicly confirmed plans to phase out Assistant in favor of Gemini, which offers significantly more advanced capabilities. Over the years, Google has gradually removed features from Assistant, further signaling the transition to Gemini as the new standard.
While some Google Home devices still rely on Assistant, its diminishing feature set and inconsistent responsiveness have underlined the need for an upgrade. Gemini integration is now being tested on Google Home, bringing renewed usability and smarter interactions. This next-generation AI assistant aims to deliver a more seamless, capable voice experience across Google’s device portfolio.
