Gemini AI Is Now Your Copilot In Android Auto

At Google I/O 2025, Google announced that Gemini AI would become available across a wide range of devices running Android or connected to Android phones, including cars, watches, and TVs. Since that announcement, there has been growing evidence of Google’s ongoing development of Gemini experiences for Android Auto. Now, as of mid-November, Google is beginning to roll out Gemini support to all Android Auto users who have already upgraded their Google Assistant to Gemini AI. This upgrade to Android Auto will be gradually released to more users over the coming months.

Android Auto is currently available in over 250 million cars worldwide, according to Google, which means a vast number of users will soon benefit from Gemini’s AI features while driving. Initially, Gemini will support 45 languages, and your car’s display will notify you when the service is available in your area. Gemini’s key advantage over the traditional Google Assistant is its ability to understand natural language and carry out tasks swiftly on behalf of the user. This makes hands-free interactions inside the car safer and more efficient, allowing drivers to maintain focus on the road while conversing with an AI that feels like speaking to another person.

What Gemini Offers in Android Auto

Once you have Gemini and Android Auto installed on your Android phone, you just need to connect the phone to your car to start using Gemini while driving. You can activate it by saying “Hey Google,” pressing the microphone button on your car’s screen, or long-pressing the voice control button on your steering wheel.

Gemini integrates with multiple Android apps to fulfill your requests, including Google Maps, Messages, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Tasks, Keep, Samsung apps, and more. For instance, Gemini can pull information from Google Maps about points of interest and reroute your navigation if needed. You might say, “Hey Google, I’m craving barbecue. Are there any good spots along my route, open now, near my destination?” Gemini will search Google Maps, display results, and assist with any detours.

Additionally, Gemini can summarize incoming texts from friends and groups and send voice-activated messages to your contacts. You can ask it to include emojis, share your estimated arrival times, or translate messages into different languages. Gemini also reads information from apps like Gmail—if you need an address from an email, simply ask Gemini to find it and guide you there. It can even provide summaries of unread emails while you drive.

Moreover, Gemini Live keeps you entertained by chatting with you about topics of interest. It controls music playback as well, helping you find and play playlists on YouTube, Spotify, and other music apps.
