The long-awaited moment has arrived — the Sora app is now officially available on Android in select regions. Even better, users no longer need an invite to download it, a major shift from its initial iOS rollout. According to an announcement on X from OpenAI’s official Sora account, Android users in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand can now install Sora and start creating AI-generated videos powered by the Sora 2 video engine.
OpenAI previously confirmed that new users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Korea could join the app without an invite for a limited time. While the company hasn’t specified how long this window will remain open, those eager to experiment with AI video creation on Android or iOS should act quickly.
Expanding Sora means more AI videos
At the heart of Sora’s appeal is the Sora 2 video generation model, which turns short text prompts into impressively realistic video clips. The app’s remixing feature also lets users modify or enhance existing videos by adding new elements or prompts, fueling a wave of creative experimentation across social media.
With the Android launch, OpenAI is widening Sora’s reach — and the volume of AI-generated videos is expected to grow dramatically. Whether that’s exciting or concerning depends on where you stand in the ongoing debate over synthetic media. Interestingly, this Android rollout still excludes Europe, where neither the Android nor iOS versions are available yet.
AI video technology has advanced rapidly in recent months. Alongside OpenAI’s expansion, Google recently upgraded its Veo model to version 3.1, and Meta has rolled out its own video platform, Vibes. Together, these developments signal a new phase in the race to dominate AI-driven video creation.
