Apple Finally Brings Its App Store To The Web

In a move many developers consider long overdue, Apple has officially launched its App Store on the web. This new feature allows users outside the iOS ecosystem to browse the entire App Store from any laptop or desktop computer. For users not tied to Apple’s devices, it means they can now explore the vast selection of apps available on the App Store using any browser or operating system.

The web interface is sleek and user-friendly. On the left side, a sidebar organizes apps by categories, including dedicated sections for games and Apple Arcade. Clicking on an app opens a detailed view where users can browse screenshots, read reviews from other users, and watch demo videos if available from the developer. While there is no direct download option from the web, a handy “Share” button lets visitors easily send app recommendations to friends via email or text.

The App Store remains a significant revenue engine for Apple

Apple’s decision to bring the App Store online aligns with the platform’s essential role in the company’s revenue strategy. Increasing visibility of App Store offerings can drive more user engagement and, ultimately, sales. Many people often hear about exciting new iOS apps while on their desktops but don’t switch to their iPhones to check them out. By making the App Store accessible on the web, Apple provides an easy way for users to discover apps for later download or purchase.

Highlighting the platform’s magnitude, Apple revealed that the App Store generated over $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024 alone. Remarkably, the App Store ecosystem has nearly tripled in size over the past five years. Additionally, small developers have seen a substantial boost, with earnings increasing by almost 77% since 2021.

Beyond individual app sales, the App Store is a crucial part of Apple’s Services division. In the recent September quarter, Apple’s services segment, which includes the App Store, brought in $28.75 billion. This segment is projected to grow even more in the near future, underscoring Apple’s increasing reliance on its robust digital ecosystem.
