Instagram Will Soon Let You Customize Your Reels Preferences

Instagram has surpassed 3 billion monthly active users, and to mark this massive milestone, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has teased a new feature that lets you take more control over your Reels experience by removing topics you don’t want to see.
A Milestone and a New Direction

In a celebratory video, Mosseri revealed that most of Instagram’s growth has been fueled by DMs, Reels, and recommendations. As a result, the platform will double down on these areas, reshaping the app’s focus over the coming months. This includes shifting even more attention to private messaging, short-form video, and content suggestions.

“Your Algorithm” – Customize What You See

One major upcoming change is a new Your Algorithm section. This feature will display the topics Instagram believes you’re interested in, allowing you to fine-tune them to your liking.

If you’ve gone through a breakup and would rather avoid relationship-related Reels, you can simply remove that topic. The same goes for any other category—giving you greater control over the recommendations you receive.

Leaker Alessandro Paluzzi (@alex193a) first hinted at this feature last week, sharing screenshots that now match Mosseri’s demo.

UI Changes Incoming

Instagram is also testing a navigation update that swaps the Upload button in the bottom menu with a shortcut to DMs, making direct messaging more accessible—a clear reflection of the app’s user engagement priorities.

Meta’s Internal Competition

While Instagram thrives, its sibling platform Facebook continues efforts to reclaim past relevance, experimenting with nostalgia-driven features like “Poke” and friends-only feeds. Both platforms sit under Meta’s umbrella, but Instagram’s meteoric growth is prompting renewed questions about Facebook’s long-term future.
