Elon Musk’s “Free Speech AI” Just Took a Risky Leap: Grok Imagine v0.9 Goes Public

Elon Musk’s so-called “free speech AI” has received a major update — and it’s raising both excitement and alarm. The company has rolled out Grok Imagine v0.9, a new version of its video generation model that introduces sound support, allowing users to add custom speech directly into generated clips.

In a surprising move, Musk also announced that the tool is now free for everyone, removing previous paywall restrictions. While that sounds like a democratizing step, the combination of unrestricted access and voice synthesis could open the door to celebrity deepfakes and political misinformation if safeguards aren’t properly enforced.
Grok Imagine Challenges Sora 2 Head-On

The 0.9 update is a notable leap over previous builds of Grok Imagine. Earlier versions lacked both audio support and were available only to X Premium and SuperGrok subscribers. The latest release fixes these limitations while also upgrading video smoothness from 16 FPS to 24 FPS, narrowing the gap with professional-grade AI video tools.

Musk revealed the update in a post on X (formerly Twitter), framing it as a direct challenge to OpenAI’s Sora 2, which launched just days earlier with an invite-only model. Grok Imagine, meanwhile, is faster and more accessible, capable of generating short clips in just seconds, compared to Sora’s relatively slower render times of over a minute.
Putting Grok Imagine to the Test

Curious about the hype, I tried Grok Imagine firsthand to see how far its capabilities go. I began with harmless prompts — two animated animals chatting, a Tesla racing F1 cars, a cheerful dog, and even a bubble-wrapped car. Visually, the results were impressive, crisp, and vivid.

Then I explored its new speech function. I created an “Ice Princess” character and made her say lighthearted, even cheesy lines — which the model executed smoothly. But when I slipped in some profanity, the AI still complied, showing no built-in content filter or moderation cues.

That discovery made me wonder: if Grok Imagine has no hard restrictions, could it replicate the voices and likenesses of real public figures? The answer came quickly — yes, it could. Within seconds, I generated a video of Donald Trump delivering random lines I wrote. There were no warnings, refusals, or content blocks whatsoever.
The Fine Line Between Innovation and Misuse

While Grok Imagine v0.9 marks a major step forward in accessible video generation, it also walks a dangerous ethical line. A tool that can convincingly mimic real-world figures — with voice and facial realism — risks being weaponized for deepfakes, disinformation, or targeted harassment.

Unless Musk’s team introduces strict guardrails and verification systems, Grok Imagine’s “free speech” freedom could quickly turn into a battleground for AI abuse.
