Roku offers a strong lineup of streaming players that can instantly add smart TV functionality to an older television or provide an alternative to your TV’s built-in operating system. These devices stand out for their intuitive interface, access to popular streaming apps, support for local channels, and a variety of hidden but useful features. However, while Roku’s performance is generally solid, the devices aren’t the most powerful on the market. Over time, you might notice sluggish menus or lagging apps — frustrating, but usually fixable. Still, there isn’t a single setting that can magically solve every slowdown.
Start with a Simple Restart
Before trying any advanced steps, begin with a simple reboot. This basic fix can clear temporary system glitches, refresh memory, and restart background processes.
To reboot your Roku:
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- If you don’t see the Power sub-menu, look for System restart directly under System.
Once your Roku restarts, check if performance improves. If it’s still running slow, move on to the next steps.
Reset Network Connections
If multiple apps are loading slowly, your internet connection may be the culprit. Roku recommends resetting your network settings to ensure a clean reconnection.
To reset your network:
- Navigate to Settings > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset > Reset connection.
- Your Roku will restart automatically, after which you’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
Check for Software Updates
Roku players automatically update, but verifying this manually can help rule out software-related lag.
To check for updates:
- Go to Settings > System > Software update, then select Check Now.
- If an update is available, your Roku will download and install it.
Perform a Factory Reset
If performance issues persist, a factory reset can return your Roku to its original state. Keep in mind that this erases all data, apps, and preferences, restoring your device as it was when you first unboxed it.
To perform a factory reset:
Open Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset, then select Factory reset everything.
Some Roku models also include a physical reset button. Press and hold it for about 10 seconds to reset the device completely. Once complete, your Roku should feel as responsive and quick as when it was new.
